Chapter 1 • Introduction
Description
The Apex III and IV hand held terminals feature a full alphanumeric keypad, full graphic
display (240 x 160 pixels) with user activated backlighting, a voice-capable standard PC
8 ohm speaker, 4 MB of Flash memory and 4 MB of on-board RAM. The Apex III and
IV contain a 32 bit microcontroller @ 33 mHz and run Symbol Wireless Spectrum 24.
The Apex III and IV support Batch or Wireless operations via an internal type III
PCMCIA port that can simultaneously support two type I or II devices. This port
provides the user with connectivity and memory expansion options including network
interface adapters, wired and wireless high speed modems, Flash drives and RAM disks.
The Apex III and IV have an optional integrated laser scanner. Features include long
range, very high density, wide angle or advanced long range. A squeeze-lock connector
offering tethered connectivity (2D Scanner, CCD, wand, etc.) provides an alternative to
an integrated laser.
Data is transmitted to and from the Apex III and IV via the infrared interface or the
optional end cap Serial RS 232 Interface port. The Apex III and IV utilize a DOS based
operating system (ROM-DOS 6.22), supporting DOS applications, graphic displays and
existing DOS user software. A Windows-based program generator is available to execute
most data collection applications.
